The start of the virtual tour

A Grant Funded Project to Improve Access
We are delighted to share a newly completed virtual tour for Market Lavington Museum, created as part of a grant funded project to improve access and engagement with this much loved local attraction. Located in the former schoolmaster’s house beside the churchyard and behind the Old School, the museum explores the working and social history of Market Lavington and Easterton from Victorian times to the present day. The virtual tour has been designed to reflect the character of the museum while making its collections accessible to a wider audience.

A Bespoke Virtual Tour Experience
The tour has been built using a bespoke, non CMS approach, with a fully custom interface designed specifically for the museum. Navigation is clear and intuitive, allowing visitors to move through the space naturally and explore exhibits at their own pace.

Audio Described Hotspots by Museum Volunteers
Interactive hotspots are placed throughout the tour, enabling users to discover more about individual artefacts and displays. Each hotspot includes audio descriptions recorded by Market Lavington Museum volunteers, adding personality and authenticity to the experience while helping to bring the stories behind the objects to life.

These audio elements also support visitors with visual impairments or those who prefer to listen rather than read.

Improving Accessibility for All Visitors
One of the most important benefits of the virtual tour is improved accessibility. For visitors who are unable to climb stairs or access the first floor of the building, the tour provides a meaningful way to explore areas of the museum that may otherwise be inaccessible.

The tour also supports visitors who may find busy or unfamiliar environments challenging, as well as those who are unable to visit in person due to mobility, health, or distance.

Seamless Viewing on Mobile and Tablet
The virtual tour has been optimised to work seamlessly across mobile phones and tablets, making it easy to explore the museum on smaller screens. The interface adapts naturally to touch based navigation, allowing users to move through the tour, activate hotspots, and listen to audio descriptions with ease on any device.

This ensures the tour is accessible whether viewed at home, in the classroom, or on the move.

Supporting Education and Community Engagement
Beyond accessibility, the virtual tour is a valuable educational and outreach tool. It allows schools, researchers, and members of the local community to engage with the museum remotely, and provides an engaging introduction for those planning a future visit.

For those who cannot visit in person, the tour ensures the museum’s collections and stories remain open, inclusive, and widely accessible.
