Campus Engagement Platforms Compared: Managed Platforms, Signposted, Virtual Tours and DIY (2026)
An honest comparison of campus engagement and virtual open day options for UK schools, colleges and universities: the managed platforms, Signposted, a bespoke 360 virtual tour, and the DIY route, with what each does, what it costs and who it suits.
Universities and larger schools now have a category of software to themselves: the campus engagement platform. The pitch is a personalised online visit, a guided tour, open-day booking, student ambassadors and lead capture, all branded and measured. The products are good, and so are the prices. This is a plain comparison of the main options for a UK institution in 2026, including our own Signposted, with the trade-offs stated as fairly as we can manage. We have not named the individual platforms; their websites and published price lists are easy to find.
The managed campus platforms
The established UK platforms in this space set the benchmark. They do audience personalisation (prospective undergraduate, parent, international, postgraduate), guided tours built from 360 photography, on-campus and virtual events, ambassador video, to-do lists, chat integrations and lead capture, with analytics across all of it and accessibility to WCAG 2.2 AA. They are managed products: the vendor's team builds the experience with you. Published pricing for the leading platform starts at around £20,000 a year for the core, with paid modules on top for lead capture, events, personalisation and the map, so a full deployment is typically in the £30,000 to £40,000 a year range. They suit a university with a recruitment budget and a team to run them.
Signposted
Signposted is our answer to the same jobs for sites that will never spend £30,000 a year on them. It is built around a real map with directions to every door, which the platforms treat as a module, and adds the engagement layer on top: "I am a…" audiences with to-do lists, guided trails, events with booking, people and ambassadors, social posts, a built-in enquiry form with CRM webhooks and presets for the education systems, branding pulled from your website, QR codes and GA4 analytics. The difference in approach is that your own team builds and keeps it rather than commissioning a managed project, and a 360 tour is optional rather than the starting point. It is free during early access, and tour clients get it included. The Ridgeway College demo shows every section on a fictional school.
A bespoke 360 virtual tour
For many schools the thing families most want is to look inside, and a bespoke campus tour does that better than any map: full-frame 360 photography of every space, hotspots with video and prospectus content, aerial 360s to orient the whole site, and a CMS so admissions can edit it. It is a production rather than a platform, priced per project from the low thousands, with no annual fee unless you want hosting and editing through 360 Studio. It does not do audiences, events or lead capture on its own, which is why the two combine well: the tour embeds into the Signposted page.
The DIY route
A Google My Maps embed, an Eventbrite page, a Typeform and a PDF campus map will do the four jobs separately for nothing. The cost is in the seams: four links in the letter, nothing personalised, no trail, and a map nobody can get directions from. It works for a small school with one open day a year and a patient admissions officer. The moment there are two audiences or two sites it stops scaling.
Which one?
If you are a university with a recruitment team and the budget, the managed platforms earn their fee, and we are happy to photograph the 360s that go into them. If you are a school, college, sixth form or a department with its own open days, Signposted does the same jobs around a map for a fraction of the cost and you own the editing. If what you need is to show the inside beautifully, commission the tour and embed it in whichever platform you use. If you are not sure, ask us: we have photographed campuses since 2008 and have no reason to push you to the wrong tool.
